Jack P., Atlanta: I'm not a Catholic but I would like to hear if anyone out there knows the origins of lenten fasting. My uncle is a Knights of Columbus.

tonialiani: I need some suggestions for activities that we can do as a family during Lent. We are attending Daily Mass on Fridays, followed by a meatless soup supper and Stations of the Cross. I feel like Fridays are covered, but what would all of you suggest for us to do the rest of the week?

WyoFan: Hi all brother Knights, For us to prepare for the Easter season, we are to sacrifice some of our luxuries in this life in remembrance of what Christ did for us. For me, one luxury that I can go without is enjoying Cigars with my friends. The companionship of my friends I enjoy, but its the Cigars that I can go without for forty days. Also, I plan to attend daily mass and stations of the cross throughout this Lenten Season.

WyoFan: in response to tonialiani's inquiry, I would suggest praying the rosary every evening. As a child, our family would lite candles around the crucifix and around a statue of the Blessed Mother. We would all get on the floor to kneel and pray. It was a great way to both remember the sacrifices that Christ went though, and also some good family time.

WyoFan: the origins of the Lenten fast are somewhat hard to find. Up until the mid 6th century, the rules concerning the Lenten fast were non-existent. In the 6th Century, St. Gregory wrote a letter to St. Augustine of England that said we are to abstain from flesh and anything from flesh. This letter later become the framework for the law of the church.

Admin: Below is a message from Pope Benedict. No, he didn't send it in himself, but I'm sure he reads Knights in Interaction daily. I've included the message in the four official languages of the Knights of Columbus ...

Message of His Holiness Benedict XVI for Lent 2008: Lent invites us to "train ourselves" spiritually, also through the practice of almsgiving, in order to grow in charity and recognize in the poor Christ Himself. ... Let this time, then, be marked by a personal and community effort of attachment to Christ in order that we may be witnesses of His love. May Mary, Mother and faithful Servant of the Lord, help believers to enter the "spiritual battle" of Lent, armed with prayer, fasting and the practice of almsgiving, so as to arrive at the celebration of the Easter Feasts, renewed in spirit.

Niech Maryja, Matka i wierna Służebnica Pańska, pomaga wierzącym toczyć wielkopostną „duchową walkę" bronią modlitwy, postu i jałmużny, aby mogli obchodzić święta wielkanocne odnowieni w duchu.

gogiants: Does anyone know the significance of the number 40? It shows up a lot in the Bible and in our Catholic Traditions.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Admin: Hmmm. In modern Arabic, "40" is often used interchangeably with "a whole lot." If one says he ate "40 hamburgers," he just means that he ate a ton of sandwiches. Not sure how that got started. The first reference I can think of is to the "40 days and 40 nights" of the Old Testament's Great Flood.

WyoFan: I don't know the significance of the number forty except that it has appeared several times in the bible. Noah was on the Ark for 40 days, Jesus was in the desert for 40 days. Besides that, I don't know.
